The difference

Death, a familiar face with a scary tone. It is something we all dread and do not wish for in our lives. It comes without notice and it leaves the living in tears. There is something about it that bewilders us.

Is there a world beyond death? Are we just pronouns without nouns? What is it that makes us who we are?

Time has shown us that people have been tortured, killed, murdered, raped, and many other dastardly acts committed in the name of religion, caste, creed, community, country and power. There has been no stop to it to this day. Some countries show mercy to their citizens but commit the crime in foreign lands. Some just do it with their citizens for power and money.

Death is common and it has been happening since the time that life began in this world. There is no escape from it but we as beings choose to differentiate death as being early, late, good, bad, or many more adjectives that we would like to add to it. The religion, the region and the tradition differentiate the respect of death and the person who dies. The richness and the poorness of the person makes the death more or less valuable. Else there is no difference in the process.

We are people, some with faith and some without, some in colour and some without. Without colour! are we truly without colour, who says that white is a brighter colour than black? Why is the light more important than the darkness? When people of fair skin cannot stand the light of the sun, and when they do they are dark as the darkest night. Yet, we choose to think that the fairer race is superior to the darker race; the people with darker complexion are harassed, ridiculed, made fun of, bullied and look down on, but some of the most adored people were people who were dark in complexion, Jesus Christ, Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi, Subhash Chandra Bose, Nelson Mandela, and many more.

There was a time when we lived to survive and see the next day, but today we live for necessities that were never needed. A car, a grand house, gadgets that rule our lives, and a status that goes away the day you are nobody. The world does not see you if you do not have the money. You could be helping people around you and doing it for free, but the world won’t spend their time to witness your work, they will stand up and marvel at the contributions that people with money do in the name of charity and tax evasion. Why? Because they have the money and can make a fanfare of their achievements.

The amount of taxes we pay should give us some comfort for the lives we live, but we are not paid in kind or consideration. Instead, we have to walk the extra mile, work the extra shift, and then maybe, just maybe, we are able to live a life that we dreamt of. Some of us may never get to see that day and wonder why we are paying off the dues to the people around us. But then we do it because we care for the other, we do it because we are human. There is no fanfare or news media who will come and applause you. There is no acknowledgment from the world for the contribution you do, but you do it!

The difference is the need for us to glorify an association we have with religion, community, caste, creed, color, or just power. We are all the same, the blood we share, the body we live in, and even the food we eat. It does not differentiate the person or the community that they live in. They just are the way they are.

Mankind is the only species on this planet that has the audacity to disrespect and rape its females. No other species on earth ever makes the attempt to gang-rape an individual female. All the other species hold their women in the highest order of their living. Respect, equality, and responsibility are shared between the male and female of the species. Their offsprings are taught to face the challenges of life and they are made to be independent and strong.

We as the human race are making ourselves weaker with the inclusion of technology by our side, mental disorder cases are on the rise and they will continue to rise not only because of an external factor like peer pressure, societal norms, career progression, but because our genes are getting weaker with every generation.

There is respite and understanding in the people around us, some of us can see the reason for a difference in our lives, there is a reason for us to believe that life can be magnanimous and grand, if only we choose to make it so.

I could not fathom a land where we cannot differentiate between cultures, regions, countries, or colours but we do. There is hate for a community because a few are the rotten apples. There is bigotry and nepotism that makes us want to only help the ones that we are related or associated with. The difference that makes us hate another.

It will be a while before we actually make a difference in the world and unite to fight a common battle. COVID19 has been that one instance where we are uniting to a common foe, not an alien, not an invader, not from the next country, not your neighbour, not the person in another community but a virus that can kill irrespective of region, religion, caste, creed or colour. No differentiation in gender or age. It just targets those that are weak and unable to face the world for its treachery.

Some would call it karma, some would call it an act of God, while others would conspire that forces are creating this scare for the need of profit and capitalism. Anyone of them may be right or any one of them may be wrong, there is something that we need to think of from this ordeal. The good it has done for the community and people around it? How can we as individuals make a difference to these monolithic hate thoughts that have become our belief?

Change is a path that we can take only if we believe that it is the right way forward. Help, care, nurture are some of the things we can do for the ones who want to make the difference. There is a world of 7.5 billion people. If each of us can focus on helping 10 random people (no bias in caste, religion, colour, creed or country) around us, the whole world would be a place that we could call Heaven!

It is time to change and make a difference!
